cavalry charges

Post by remus »

Is there a bug with cavalry charges? For example, in many games that I have played on multiplayer I have ordered cavalry squadrons to charge into infantry not in square. I deliberately aimed their charge to the extreme end of the line. Enemy cavalry was in the vicinity close to but away from the line at the opposite end.Because I had in other incidences experienced the same "bug" I purposely did not hit the charge button until I was within what I judged to be the point of no return, maybe within 10 metres perhaps in real life. The infantry line would have surely broken had contact been made but as soon as I hit the charge icon they immediately turned right and charged towards the nearest enemy cavalry squadron, travelling across a full line of firing infantry, into the squadron of heavy british cavalry. Needless to say the result was a disaster for that squadron. Not a gamebreaker unless it is going to happen each time I have a similar situation when charges are implemented.

Charge hits the closest visible and valid target in automatic; the causes your cavalry select not the line can be differents: example the ground where the infantry was has a too high defensive bonus for permit the charge or simply from the ground angle or elevation (sometime a target is not visibile). I can only suppose the closest target stored for the unit in that moment was the cavalry for contextual situations

Hi Mitra 76

None of the above was present. As I explained my cavalry was so close to the infantry line on a level ground within a point of no return. Had I not hit the charge button they would have run straight into the line and the line would have broken, they were that close. It was irrational behaviour in real life terms to turn 90 degrees right when there was no more than 10 metres or less to complete the initial charge, then run in front of a line of firing infantry who again were no more than 10 metres or less away, so as to charge a squadron of fresh british heavy cavalry who would have been at least 50 metres or more away and also surrounded by other enemy units.

Remus, I usually don't use the charge button but tell my cavalry to "run speed" to a point beyond and through an enemy unit. When they get there and halt they'll then charge them.

Also bear in mind that the game is not designed to allow perfect control. Your cavalry squadron captain or major might just be an idiot who prefers to melee with an enemy cavalry unit if he sees them as more of a threat or a more "glorious" opponent!

Hi Saddlletank

Thanks for your input. I appreciate and enjoy the fact that commanders could be idiots at certain times. I am concerned though that at times we can be making this an excuse for what actually is a fault in the system, For example as you pointed out you don't hit the charge button but why not when that is what it is for? The problem happenend at the moment I hit the charge in the most favourable of conditions.Given the situation as I explained it in my post it is too much to argue that this is due to battlefield unpredictabilities.I love the game and have supported it from 2007 so this post is only to highlight something that might be missed by the developers who have done a marvellous job. By the way this was not the first time it happened but on other similar bizarre situations I put it down to not having perfect control.
