From: 'Vermont in the Civil War', volume II, page 477; by G.G. Benedict, one of General Stannard's staff officers:

"Major General Hancock, after rallying troops to meet Pickett's charge farther to the right, rode down to speak to General Stannard, and fell, while addressing him, close to the front line, just after the flank attack had been ordered. He was caught, as he sank from his horse, by Lieutenants Hooker and Benedict, of Stannard's staff, and the bleeding from his wound - a singular and very severe one from the joint entrance, at the upper part of the thigh, of a minie ball and a twisted iron nail, carried from his saddle-bow, through which the buller first passed, into his body, was stopped by their hands."

The Lieutenant Benedict who caught Hancock went on to become the author of 'Vermont in the Civil War'.
"My God, if we've not got a cool brain and a big one too, to manage this affair, the nation is ruined forever." Unknown private, 14th Vermont, 2 July 1863

Right on.
Sallie had been with the regiment since the early days of the war sharing all the marches and battles with the men. She was known to take her place in line with the men during battle and bark loudly at the enemy. When the regiment retreated toward the end of the fighting on July 1 in the Battle of Gettysburg, Sallie became separated from the regiment. Finding her way back to this position, she stayed with her wounded men lying in the fields until the end of the battle.

It is said that Sallie hated only three things; “Rebels, Democrats and Women.”
Got one for us Chris G.? :)

i have a trivia question about the current Gettysburg, i hope this falls within the rules of the game...

if you ever get to visit, there's a diorama to check out that's horribly mislabeled in a newly-renovated historical building within Gettysburg. In what building is the misleading diorama located?
