How to use Modifed Battles

Post by Ham920 »

Gentlemen - I'm an old guy (approaching 70) who has been a Civil War Buff since he was in 4th grade and love playing Civil War games on my PC such as Take Command and Sid Meier's Gettysburg, but I'm having trouble mastering Scourge of War and need help downloading and using the great modifications you have created. I have all the additional battles - Antietam, Brandy Station, Chancellorsville, and Pipe Creek - but when I download your modifications and put them in the mod folder they don't work. For example, the instructions for Savage Station say to use Winrar to download the modification from the Dropbox and use the extract command go place the files in the mod folder. "This process should automatically create a 'Savage Station Redux' folder which can be copied to your SOWGB folder." Where does this folder - Savage Station Redux - folder appear? When I extract the files in the Winrar application there is no main folder such as Savage Station. If I create a folder and such as Savage Station in the mod folder and extract all the folders from the Winrar application into the it they do not appear to work - there is no accompanying text - when I select them from the Modification screen. What am I doing wrong? Please help.

Whether you extract or unzip, make sure the unzipped mod has one main folder, bearing the mod's name. Open that folder and you'll see one or more folders that make up the mod: OOBs, Scenarios, Maps, etc.

When you open the game and go in Modifications, make sure the box to the left of the mod's name is checked (activated), or highlighted (WL). Then select 'Use Selected Mods' at the bottom of the Modifications window.

Hope this helps, sometimes folks miss the simplest steps...

And Welcome to the forum!

Thank you for your help. I really, really appreciate it. Here is where I’m at.
When I go to the dropbox from the link there are 7 folders plus an intro text. The 7 folders are graphics, logistics, maps, OOBs, scenarios, sounds and text. There is no main folder “Savage Station Redux”.
I click on Download in the top right hand corner and select “Direct Download”
The Winrar icon appears at the bottom left hand corner of the screen telling me the download is completed.
The Winrar icon also appears in my download folder on my C drive
I click on the Winrar icon from my downloads folder in my C drive and a screen comes up with the same 7 folders and the text file that I downloaded from the dropbox
I click on the Extract To icon and point to the mod folder located at C:\MatrixGames\Scourage of War – Gettysburg
When I open the mod folder the 7 folders are listed individually – there is no automatically created "Savage's Station Redux folder noted in the intro text which states:
“This should automatically create a "Savage's Station Redux" folder which can be copied to your SoWGB folder”
The 7 folders are listed individually just as they appeared in the dropbox.
Where is the automatically created folder? Obviously, the names of the folders appear on my Modification screen but don’t work.

Should I send you an attachment of my screens or a list what my Modification Screen looks like or some other screens?
WHAT AM I DOING WRONG?

Make a new folder in the Mods folder and name it Savage Station. Copy all 7 folders you extracted and paste them in your new Savage Station folder. I know you've tried this before, but this is the fix for your present state.

I always offer my mods in complete form, so they just have to be unzipped and copied to the Mods folder. Extraction methods just lead to confusion.

Thank you so very very much for your help. I created a new folder and placed the Savage Station folders I downloaded in it and it works fine. I see Savage Station on the Sandbox Screen. However, I have also downloaded other modifications – Jackson’s Valley Campaign and the Peninsula Campaign, but these do NOT show and text when I place a yellow box next to them in the Modification screen.
I downloaded mods from the “Topic: Great Campaigns of the Civil War – Update: Atlanta OOB Pack Released” as well as the Bugles and Flags XVIII. Per the instructions in the Topic I added the Bugles and Flags XVIII to the mod folder first and then unzipped the Jackson Valley Campaign and added it to the mod folder. (I had a copy of this campaign in the mod folder previously, but I deleted it and downloaded a fresh copy from this Topic screen). The Bugles and Flags XVIII appears in the Mod screen fine with text when it’s activated, however, the Jackson Valley Campaign does not appear to have any accompanying text when it activated. Should it have the text that is in the Overview file? When the JVC is activated the OOBs appear in the Sandbox, there are no JVC maps under “Select a Map” even though there is an “Overview and Maps” folder. Similarly, the colorful introduction screen does not appear. Should text and the colorful intro sheet appear with each mod? Can you please get everything to work? Thanks again.

Alright, you're making progress!

I don't think any of those mods you mentioned contain game maps, they're just referring to included historic maps of the battles. Pretty sure all they include for gameplay are Sandbox OOBs. Don't expect introductory pages or Modification intros, some mods include them, some don't. Place mods right above B&F in Modifications to see if they have introductory graphics, also they will display all their features best in this position. Mods prioritized higher in Modifications may have their features cancelled out, best to move mods down, right above B&F, to insure their features work properly. Or, deactivate mods when not in play instead of moving them around, that's what I do.

Glad to see you're getting a hang of this Modifications game. Without modifications, this game would have been done years ago, at least for SP folks.

Thanks again for all your help. As the saying goes, you’ve taught an old dog new tricks. I’ll play around with the instructions you’ve provided regarding the placement of the mods and the introductory graphics and let you know if I have further questions. I am so very appreciative of your assistance. Thanks again.
