I bought my set of the Official Records back in the 80s, and I love the books rather than the CDs of the OR that are now available. However, the good folks at Cornell University have scanned the entire set of the OR, and it's available online for free, and it even has a search feature. Hard to beat that.

If you buy only one book of the OR series, buy the Index. It contains 1242 pages that will ease your research by having it "in hand." Makes it much simpler to use the onlive resources.
When I wrote my Master's Thesis, it was of great help to have it immediately available. Of course, when I wrote my thesis, the Internet was in it's infancy and nothing like the resource it is today. I literally spent weeks in the basement, back in the far corner, pouring over the ORs for info on the 5th Iowa Cavalry. Unfortunately, the history department had discarded (yes, THROWN AWAY) an entire set of the ORs but saved the index which the department chair (and my thesis committee chair) gave to me! What a waste!
