Need help finding a book
Need help finding a book
I have read and re-read Freeman's Lee's Lieutenants many times...and I enjoy it. Is there a book or volume that deals with the study of the Army of the Potomac command and history that anyone could recommend?

Bruce Catton's three volume history of the Army of the Potomac
The three volumes are:
"Mr. Lincoln's Army"
"Glory Road"
"A Stillness at Appomattox"

You can get farther with a kind word and a gun than you can with a kind word alone.

Commanding the Army of the Potomac, by Stephen R. Taaffe, 2006
ISBN: 0700614516
isn't a history of the AoP, but a history of it's command.
I enjoyed it and learned a lot from it.

I have read Bruce Cattons books also, and really enjoyed them. A newer book by Jeffery Wert "The Sword of Lincoln" is good, it follows William Swintons Book from 1866 " The Army of the Potomac". Russel H Beatie has finished 3 volumes "The Army of the Potomac"
It starts November 1860 to May 1862. Very comprehensive I hope he continues through out the war. Gordon C Rhea has written 4 volumes very detailed from the Wilderness to Cold Harbor. I think he is writting more. On the Confederate side Douglas S. Freeman's books still rule the world. As good supplements to the Army of Northern Virginia You might try "Stonewall Jackson" by GFR Henderson, "Manasses to Appomattox" by James Longstreet,"Fighting for the Confederacy" by Porter Alexander. All these books I bought off the internet through "Abe's Books.com." You can get new books or used how ever much money you want to spend. I have more but this should wet your appetite.

It not about the AOP, but this book is about combat in the Civil War. It is "The Bloody Crucible of Courage: Fighting Methods and Combat Experience of the Civil War by Brent Nosworthy. It has 752 pages,660 pages of text, and the rest is refs., endnotes, Bibliography, and the Index. You probably get at the Library or on Ebay, that is where I got my copy.

Yes I have, Three times I have read them and they were better each time I did. I have started buying the "Official Records of the War of the Rebellion" It is 128 vols. I only have the first 32. I have read 3 vols. The first was outstanding and so was the second the third is draging out a little. One is not supposed to read the "OR" like a novel. Having read so many books sense 1964, I really do enjoy "OR". You can really tell the different personalities in their letters and orders.

Re:Need help finding a book
There are many online book stores that have "OR" for sale. I think, that to get the entire set it is around 2000.00 dollars. So I buy individual vols as I get the mood on. Usually about 6 or 7 vols a year. They range from 5.00 to 35.00 each, depending on Historical importance, availability, and condition. I have found the vols pertaining to the Peninsula Campaign. But haven't found the Gettysburg vols for a decent price yet.
