MAP READING? WHEN DOING ORDERS

This is where our experts try to teach you the very flexible modding system for our previous release - SOW Gettysburg and its add-ons. It's powerful, but dangerous. Post your tips and your questions.

Look at Map pick name of nearest landmark you want your recipient to go to, THEN call up courier screen and give the order, I would prefer a printed map or to be able to call up a map from courier screen but doing it the other way works fine for now. From there you can add more instructions move here, attach there etc etc. Other than that it's basic map reading and terrain association and then letting the generals do their job from there. If you have to get more specific then I ride my but over there and place them by hand once they arrive (I prefer to do HITS myself). If the real generals could manage with that crappy map than so can you!
;)
There's no doubt I could use the map, but often a location is oblitered by unit icons, which in reality a historical CO did not have to contend with and did not have to chase his tail around trying to find.

Hi ADukes

I have been trying to post the values in my various .csv files but I am having problems in getting the MS EXCEL selections accepted into the message post area.

In addition I keep getting distracted by wanting to know just what is happening in Britain. ..... as I pay my taxes there.

I will keep experimenting

I remember in the SMG style games there was a "L" key, or "TAB" key that would ID locations for only as long as you held the key down. I realize it's not historical, but at least it would be user friendly. Actually If my CO can see something, he should know what it is without having to go to a map! ;)

I imagine my use of the courier system is much like yours. Go to courier screen, find that the correct location name is not obvious, go to map to find farm name, go back to courier screen, find that the farm name is not listed, change request/order to "support my left flank." :)
I can make this march and I will make Georgia howl.

I guess I am getting into deep water here. The whole question of how objectives are set up in the game and incorporated into scenarios seems like the mystery wrapped in an enigma etc etc.

I wanted to mod some scenarios by amending and adding objectives which I thought was straightforward ……. but I now have the feeling that this is not possible at the moment.

To do the job properly, I suspect that I would need to amend the locations section of the ‘.csv’ file for the appropriate map. This lives in the ‘map’ folder in the game ‘base’ folder which I believe is currently out of bounds. I can add an objective and get points for occupying it but it remains ‘not known’ … less than legitimate and not fit to circulate.

Can someone put me out of my misery and confirm this is so.

If however it is possible to add functioning objectives, I would be grateful for a step by step guide to how to do it by someone in the know.

I find using that kind of message is like shooting in the dark, taking into consideration time restraints.

Right now playing Jackson, DH Hill has showed up on the map edge, I'm having a wicked hard time trying to make out locations as to were to send his division, so I just order him to the center of GB (out of frustration), cause all the Union icons are covering locations in between. Otherwize, I'll have to TC where I'd like him to go. I'm trying to use this Command by courier method just for DH Hill, while I TC AP Hill and Colster(?) from another direction.

What's the problem, just copy & paste the line.

But that is as historic as you can get it in my opinion. i don't remember the original order from the scenario, but you know the Feds are somewhere around Gettysburg, so you order your div to march to Gettysburg. As you have no cav at your disposal, you have to do the scouting in person. When you see the Federal lines, you order Hill to halt and let him from his div in line. Then you can advance the whole line to make contact with the enemy. At least that is the way i play and it works for me. I agree that some more locations would be great and sometimes it's hard to identify certains locations on the map, but imo you can move your units easily around with the existing courier message options without relying too much on the already given locations.

Of course my courier went down a road jam packed with Union troops, I'll be lucky that the message ever get's to DH Hill. Been banging it out with 11th Corp, now 12th Corps is showing up in strengh, it would be nice for DH Hill to hit them on the backside for a real spanking.
