Debian OS (8 DVD's)

Here you can talk about whatever floats your boat. Your favorite movie, sports team, etc. If it's a little racey, I suggest you post in R&R, otherwise we'll move it for you.

I guess the question is if you boot a Windows Install DVD and try to install Windows to the flash drive will it treat it as normal HD, ,make it bootable and install Windows on it.

I'm going to try and I'll let you know. I'm hoping it's that easy.

Sorry B, I have been pouring over things for linux, and I am getting mightly mad about it.

Linux: The Model T

Well hi...

My goodness, I like Debian but it is a monster. I installed this OS on my 2nd drive (160 gigs), and decided to push my head through that knot hole, and I have to tell you I was having problems from the start. I have a ATI HD4670 PCIe video card, and it took me most of the day to download the latest video drivers from the AMD/ATI website for Linux...I thought finally I'll be able to play SOWgb, and see if Wine really works or not... Nope, damn drivers wouldn't install properly. They installed great when I had Ubuntu...figure that one out.

Well I couldn't install my video drivers...I have been working on this OS since yesterday, and took only a couple of hours sleep in between, and I have tried everything. The support I received from the Debian forum was someone giving me google searches which only told me about earlier versions of Debian which no longer applies to the latest stable version which is now 6.0.3.

The most simple things you would think would be ready to go after te install but they are not. For instance mounting a USB drive requires you to install software/drivers just to mount the bloody thing, and don't expect it to mount every time either. One moment things work, the next time you boot they might not work any more. I tell ya sometimes I was beginning to think that this OS is still in it's alpha stages because of the problems I was having (the problems which should never show up).

So as it stands it not worth my while, or until I get more sleep to tackle it once more...either way Linux has a very, very steep learning curve, and has burned out what I think I have what is left in my head.

My suggestion to anyone who wishes to take a look at Debian is to install VMWare, or something similar, get familiar with the software, and once you feel more comfortable do a full install.

Anyway man how I love Windows 7...it's a damn beauty of an OS...Simple, and sweet.

later.

For those who cannot afford VMware, you can get something that is just as good for free.

hmmm, well I finally was able to get my internal modem working which I was told was impossible because it being a winmodem, but that just pissed me off to be told that because I don't believe in the "it's impossible", I know it can be done, and I'll die trying to figure it out.

Secondly I finally had to install several kernels to get the one that suited my hardware/software to work properly...now that was trip I can tell you, and it's not one I would like to try again (total of 5 installs in the last few days).

Finally, I tried Scourge of War - Gettysburg, so far I can't get it too call out to register. I am pretty sure it has something to do with the game, but I will keep trying just to make sure I'm not missing out on something.

Nothing would please me more than to say "hey guys, SOWgb really works well", well except maybe hearing "honey, you can have your highspeed because we won the lottery"...now that would be cool.

Well, I have tried SOWgb, and I think I know what could be stopping someone from registering their serial, and that is when you are given the registration page you require the Gecko Firefox Html installer package to be installed. Unfortunately I couldn't download it because the modem driver I am using is locked at 14.4 until I pay $20.00 dollars to unlock the full whopping potential of my modem.

For those who do happen to be blessed with a dialup connection, and have an account with Netzero I had to edit a couple of files to get it to work, and dial out to my local phone number. The phone database is so old that it only showed Halifax, and Sydney as potential servers which are both long distance (just not a viable option).

If anyone wishes to have their local phone number, and the deb install of Netzero let me know, I can edit the information for you, and pass it on.

Lastly, I am posting this while in Debian, and at 14.4, this has taken me over 8 minutes to load because of the screenshots.

Oh one more thing, the more I dig into Debian the more I am liking it, it is a nice piece of work when you get to know how it works.

Cheers...

Well this is the last time I'm going to post about this, and I'm sure there are those who would rather not see these posts in the first place. My whole goal was to find out if Scourge of War - Gettysburg can be run, and registered...I'm sorry guys I failed. On the other hand it has given me the opprotunity to test out a whole new OS which really has me hooked. Mind you it will never replace Windows 7, but I sure will keep this OS installed for quite some time.

I have finally fixed the problem with the Gecko html installer by following these instructions...
[instructions]
Download this wine_gecko (http://downloads.sourceforge.net/wine/w ... -0.1.0.cab) file to your /tmp directory

Make a file /tmp/file.reg, and in this file put:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\MSHTML]
"GeckoUrl"="z:\\tmp\\wine_gecko-0.1.0.cab"

Now do 'regedit /tmp/file.reg'
After this, do 'wine iexplore http://winehq.org'
Note: I used the above method...
You can manually install the engine:

Open a terminal and manually download/extract the Gecko package by running the following:
NOTE - You will need to install the cabextract package from the repositories to do this
wget http://downloads.sourceforge.net/wine/w ... -0.1.0.cab && cabextract wine_gecko-0.1.0.cab
Next, run the following to create the directories needed for Gecko:
mkdir -p ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/gecko/0.1.0/
Place the extracted Gecko files into the newly created directory:
mv wine_gecko ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/gecko/0.1.0/
Run regedit in the terminal. Go to HKEY_Current_User/Software/Wine/MSHTML and create a new key labeled “0.1.0”
In the new “0.1.0” key, create a new string value labeled “GeckoPath” and set the string value to “c:\windows\gecko\0.1.0\wine_gecko”

Gecko should be installed correctly now.
The last method I never tried out but for others who knows it might.

Now the real problem is that you need to give Wine access to your modem which can be done, unfortunately for my modem I just can't get it to work. There are plenty of documents out there that will help you for those who are not using a dialup connection/internal/or serial modems.

To answer a question "can you install SOWgb in Wine", and the answer is yes, and you can also install all the patches, and etc. You just have to do some tweaking to get the game to run properly, other than that if you have the time, go for it.
