Telescope / Binoculars

This is where our experts try to teach you the very flexible modding system for our previous release - SOW Gettysburg and its add-ons. It's powerful, but dangerous. Post your tips and your questions.

This is sort of a stained \ scratchy lens on the binoculars.

I don’t have any idea about how to design the outer part of this graphic, also haven’t had any luck in making the entire screen blacked out!

The zoom key can be assigned a key to simulate two clicks into one, but it would be nice to have all of this happen while closing the binoculars.

con20or - I can't really call this a mod - but try this out!

This is as simple as it can get, you have to edit your keyboard.csv file to include the following two lines.

Zoom,Z,zoom:zoom
Binoculars,B,loadscreen:Binoculars

Basically, you already have a Zoom line listed - delete that one and use this one, after you exit the binoculars, just press the Z key, and the game will go back to the normal view.

Press the B key to bring up the binoculars - Close with the X .

Then press the Z - normal view.

I'll leave it up to you to figure out anything else to do with this!

Looks sooooo good, its a real shame you cant pan around!

The binoculars themselves, theyre a .dds file? I noticed those filetypes when I was first looking into this - what opens those? Is that just a map that you have edited into the binoculars outline?

Thanks all the same davinci, if it cant be done it cant be done.

Paint.net (recommended by RB) will open them. Photoshop will too but you need a plug-in.

Paint.net is free and available here:

To view these types of files (dds) search the web for a program called Irfanview, its free, and it can also be used to edit\ view the screenshots.

The panning around will have to be done by Norb, that feature is just not available through modding.

Also, the whole screen cannot be covered up by a (dds) file, whether a map, or those binoculars, and making them with a larger border just doesn’t look right. They will resemble a periscope if made using a border.

Anything (anyone) that you wish to view with those, just line them up at almost center of the screen from top-to-bottom, it takes a little bit of practice.

con20or - What is your default screen resolution?

This is using \ resizing the Graphic to the resolution of 1280x1280:

Also - I figured out another way of getting the game to move the image to the top-left-corner, I didn't know that that was possible.

Yes, I know that you are going to ask - I can probably cover up \ blackout the bottom toolbar, but I doubt that I will go to that much trouble to figure out how!

OK , One step forward and Two steps backwards…..

There is a way of having the binoculars moveable, and rotatable while in the game.

Basically, the binoculars would have to be a part of the toolbar. The downside to this is that I have not figured out how to not have it displayed at all times.

Example – If I assign it to the Commanding Officer (i.e...Lee) – anytime that I click on him, the camera will switch to the view of the binoculars, which is moveable! (i.e…Rotatable)

Any other unit – the binoculars are not assigned as a part of the toolbar so the binoculars are able to switch between on and off.

Basically, this is not the ideal way of doing it, but it is going in the right direction.

The game is designed to keep the screen from moving if another screen is displayed, but the game is not designed to do this if the toolbar is displayed.

So, I just have to figure out a way of un-displaying the binoculars from the toolbar, once it has been called. Sort of stumped on that one at the moment !

Iincredible! :woohoo:

That looks brilliant, really. And Ii dont care at all if the bottom toolbar is still there, it looks fine to me. The compass can double as your peripheral vision!

My screen is 1680 x 1050.

This is going to be a great mod, everyone should have it!
