Everybody knows about the south's Ironclad CSS Virginia, but there were quite a few other attempts. Out of the other Ironclads built, two played a rather significant role.

Name the two...

CSS Richmond

CSS Fredericksburg

There were a lot of casemate rams built by the south.

Good show MG JB Gordon, but not the two I was thinking. The two I'm thinking of at least have greater "fame" and I think had more impact on events were they operated.

I'm going to take a stab at this and say the CSS Albemarle and CSS Arkansas.

Quite close JC and I thought of throwing out an "extra credit" question making the total 3 Ironclads. So you've effectively got 2 out of 3.

The CSS Arkansas for sure, as it played a colorful if not significant role in Farragut's attempt to capture Vicksburg. If it were not for another poor CSA decision sending the ship while in need of repairs to "support" a ground assault (resulting in the loss of the ship due to mechanical issues) it may have had much more impact.

*A small clue has just been provided to the last Ironclad due to a twist of fate.

The only other two I can think of that could be the one you're looking for, with any real significance, would be the CSS Tennessee or the CSS Nashville.

Of which, the CSS Tennessee's career was cut short while attempting to raise the blockade of Mobile on May 17, 1864 when it was ran aground.

So I'm going to say the CSS Nashville, which formally surrendered in Tombigbee River at Nanna Hubba Bluff May 10, 1865.

Well it was the CSS Tennessee I was thinking of and while it's career was cut short, during it's time the presence of the Ironclad kept Farragut (the clue) from taking Mobile Bay. It then fought a 2 day battle against the blockade fleet, which is same amount of battle that the most famous of the south's Ironclads fought.

Well it was my first attempt at a trivia question and if nothing else I learned the need to be more concise. :unsure:
