Oh Yes, I agree that Hunt was very good, and I wanted to be an artillery commander at VMI for a a while, so I have no problems with an artillery officer getting the spot light. Any one else? If not, I'll add a hint later

What do they do there? I didn't know states still have a state militia.

Why not survey the link I provided young Hancock? Also, I do not believe the VMI Institute has anything to do with a state militia.

VMI is a military school. It's basically a college run like the military academies. Difference being that it is not sponsored by any individual service and there is no direct commitment to serve when you graduate.

MOST cadets join ROTC while they are there, that pays some of the school and then you have the military commitment when you graduate. The Citadel in Charleston is the same thing.

If you want a military type college there are many options, there are even military highschools like the Marine Military Academy that I attended. So if a structured life is what you desire, then they are there for you. Of course if you like that life your best option is to try to get into one of the service academies, as then your school is free and your acceptance into that service is pretty much guaranteed. Just don't get hurt like me :)

I went to Georgia Military College which is similar to VMI and the Citadel. I think they are all good schools.

Lol, I should have asked what military schools are still in existence? To get back on track, this battery commander was from Maine and was later promoted to command a Maine regiment
