will long range artillery be more effective?

Post by Gunfreak »

in 2nd manassas, shot, shell and shrapnell is total useless, you can have a grand battery of 50 cannon and they can fire for two hours and you'd be lucky to get more then 5 kills.

if artillery realy was that useless. nobody would bother taking then to the battles

so will artillery be more effective in this new game?

I disagree, I've seen some effectiveness with long range art. fire with TC2M...the problem as I see it is targeting. If artillery could target long range, this would be a 'fix'. I see no problems 200 yards and less, the effectiveness and realism appear proportioned accurately.

I'll have to ask the team about this. I know that Jim is working on his formula's to improve them for this game. I thought they were pretty spot on. I agree that targeting would be a great feature for this game, again I'll have to see what we have time for. Thanks for the input.

well I've seen big batteries fireing everthing they have with out any effekt, shrapnel goes off over thee heads of the enemy but they nevner casue any casualties.

I mod called dixie fixed that. it mad it very dangures to move on troopes coverd by alot of artillery.
a well placed battery could could realy make it hard for the infantry. and made it more important to press an attack instead of just standing there.

I was playing a open play and my cops were under constant bombardment from 60-70 guns I don't think I took a single casualty during the 15 minutes my men stood there waiting for the enemy infantry.
in reality those guns would have decemated my infantry

Norb,

Thanks for the feedback. I understand your deadlines, but if you do not include long range targeting:
1. gameplay will be lacking
2. this game would have omitted a key element for realism...what's the battery commander for?...First, situating his battery, Second, the key, TARGETING THE ENEMY. Which enemy?...the closest, maybe, but probably the one that's most threatening to the battle plan. REALISM!
3. If you don't get this right, Gunfreak and all his followers will hound you forever about the 'long range' artillery tables...stats.

I'm trying to make this board better too, honest. There are a lot of great features provided by this new site, but we have a lot of learning to do before we get it right. I actually have an entire thread dedicated to finding a new template (which affects the color scheme).

No prepays, at least not until we are much closer to finishing. But we certainly appreciate your faith in us :)
