Modding OOBs

This is where our experts try to teach you the very flexible modding system for our previous release - SOW Gettysburg and its add-ons. It's powerful, but dangerous. Post your tips and your questions.

Modding OOBs

Post by Jack ONeill »

All,

Was fighting a sandbox battle this morning, (no-one being in the MP lobby - 0900 hrs. PST.). Got to wondering about changing the OOBs. Went looking at the OOBs in the SDK program files. They look very similar to the TC2M OOBs. So, the questions are -
Can they be changed like the TC2M OOBs could?
Do I put the new ones back in the same OOB folder?

Primarily I want to add some artillery to the Divisions so the Rebs will have some in a Division - Division fight. In this case, back in the TC2M OOBs you could just remove a line and change it. So, if I remove the Artillery Commander, the Artillery would be under the command of the Division Commander. Yes, I know to copy the original and work on the copy. I also know to change the Division, Brigade, etc. numbers in the code lines.

Am I right here? Thanks.

Jack:
New OOBs are created just as in TC2M. However, to use them, you must make a sub-folder named OOBs in the Mods folder. Put your OOB in the new sub-folder and you're ready to play. FYI sandbox mode plays much better without the independent artillery battalions. Make sure to do that for the federals also.

MTGeorgia,

Roger that. Thanks for the sub-folder tip. 2 other questions - just noticed there are 2 OOBs for each OOB. One starts out "oob" blah blah and the other starts "OOB" blah blah. Do I need to create 2 OOBs each? Are the OOBs different for MP and/or Sandbox?

Thanks.

Just one. The one with _SB_ in the name is used for the stock sandbox. If you use one of those, be sure to give it a different name.

MTGeorgia,

Thanks again. Yes, I knew about the renaming issue.

MTG,

Well, of course I can't get it to work. Have placed single, renamed OOB copy in new mods sub-folder in the main Mods folder. "New Mods" folder shows up in "Modifcations" in Main Menu section. Clicked it to activate. But nothing shows up in Sandbox OOBs. Also placed renamed copy in the SDK OOBs folder. Tried taking that one in and out. No joy. What am I missing?

Jack:
No need to place it in your SDK folder. That folder only holds the unmodified versions of the SOW files. If you have this structure:

Mods
.|_
...|
..OOBs

and it is still not working... Did you rename your oob something like OOB_SB_JacksGreatestHits.csv? You need the OOB_SB_ part.

I cannot get this to work - I must admit I haven't really understood this folder structure:
Mods
.|_
...|
..OOBs

What I did was take a working OOB. Load it into Open Office. Made no changes. Saved with another name using OOB_SB_Johns_test as a filename.

Created a folder structure like this:
Mods
Johns_Test
OOBs
(put the new OOB in the OOBs folder)

The new OOB shows up in the Mod listing and "seems" to be working but when I select it, the SOW program crashes.

I also tried putting the OOBs folder directly below the Mods folder as described and it also does not work. Since this game has been released, I have tried every possible variation I could think of without success.

PLEASE: Can someone create a simple, working, step-by_step example of how to alter and existing OOB file and post it?

That's your problem. The CSV files aren't compatible with Open Office. You have to use Excel or Garnier's program.

It sounds as if there is an error in the csv file itself. Whenever I have a crash as you described, it is usually because I have screwed up the corps/division/brigade numbering of some unit or commander. Try looking over those numbers in the changes you made. The folder structure you gave looks fine.

Are you sure? I thought Open office was completely compatible with MS Office.
