I'm finally going to Gettysburg.

I'm finally going to Gettysburg. I just wanted to ask anybody here who has gone to tell me some of the best places on the field. Ive already got the area from Little Round Top west to the Emmitsburg on my plan, but what about other places.

It really depends on how long you will be there. To really cover the area you already have planned can take a full day. I would definitely plan on going to the area of the Angle and looking over the area of Pickett's Charge and the Culp's Hill area is also good. Then there is the McPherson Ridge area. Any of these can take a full day to fully appreciate.

If you only have a day, I'd make a stop at the Angle and look around there then continue down Cemetary Ridge to the Round Top's. There you can visit Little Round Top, Big Round Top, Devil's Den, the Wheatfield, the Peach Orchard and Trostle Farm. All in all a visit to Gettysburg can take a week and you will probably still miss something.

I'll be going for three or four days, so I think I will go to McPherson's Ridge, Cemetary Ridge, and the area I named before (Little Round Top, Devil's Den, Wheat Field, Peach Orchard, Trostle Farm, and Stony Hill.)

Well Shirkon has just a bit more experience on the battlefield than I ....

But from my amateur perspective, my favorite place on the battlefield is the Wheatfield.

If you have 3 or 4 days there, I'd suggest seeing the battlefield chronologically. Just like Shirkon said, you'll need a full day to really appreciate each day's battlefield. Also, don't forget to visit the East Cavalry Field. Try to pick a crowded time and head over there. You'll find it nearly empty.

Personally, I'd like to take a day and head south to the Pipe Creek Line. I know there was no battle there, but it was Meade's ground of choice and I am dying to see the lay of the land.

True history buff; 3 or 4 days to really soak it in. You'll get to see plenty in that amount of time. Casual visitor; 1 or 2 days since they usually just want an overview. 1 for the battlefield, 1 for the town and museums.

I've done the Wheatfield, Pickett's Charge, Devils Den, Little Round Tip podcasts and they were all excellent. My favorite was the Devils Den. Very cool perspective of the faceoff between Smith's battery and the 1st Texas.

Not to boast, but I personally think I know enough to where I could be my own guided tour. :laugh: I'm sure I'll bring a few books for a reference.

I went a just last year. Beautiful view everywhere. Even (surprisingly) from my hotel. It was foggy all the time I was there so I had a completely unique view of the town. Everything was amazing really. Hope you have a great time. I went for 3 days, four should be plenty.

I would suggest finding the david acheson rock carving he was a relative of mine killed on stony hill july 2 and he was buried temporarily under a rock behind the jacob weikert farm the rock is just on the edge of the forest. i went there may 8 to may 11 and i still didnt see it all a picture of the rock is my avatar lol.
