Division Move problem and 'enemy sighted reports'
Division Move problem and 'enemy sighted reports'
A couple of things i wouldnt mind hearing your thoughts on -
1. Ive tried to explain this before, and it very quickly gets complicated and hard to understand (you'll see why) but I see the beta patch still has it, and Ill try one more time to make sense in the hopes theres an easy fix. For ease of reference, Division general is DG, Brigade general is BG.
If DG orders a brigade to move, a courier rides from DG to BG gives him the order, then BG and brigade start moving.
If a DG orders the whole division to move (for example, load up a sandbox and as DG, double click anywhere on the map, or move yourself as DG to a point, then click a division formation button) no couriers go out, troops just start moving immediately. Ruins the whole courier system a bit. Why
What should happen when a DG gives a division move command, a courier should spawn for each BG and travel to him, and his brigade should not start moving until it reaches him with his orders.
This used not to be an issue with the corps commander, because there were no corps formation buttons, but it is now with the new movement map. If you double click on the map, the whole corps starts moving, immediately. Aside from unrealistic, its kind of dangerous, one wrong click with the wrong general selected and your whole army could be on the march.
2. Lots of 'enemy sighted' reports, which i was delighted to see, but they only say 'in the vicinity'. Because I have no idea who most of the generals are, or where they are, its not much use to me at present. Do they ever give landmarks? It was kansas sandbox i was playing on, and im aware its pretty bare of landmarks.

Yes, that was round 1 of having information travel up the chain of command. It's a very nice addition. Hopefully, there will be a round 2, which will give the enemy position via some nearby landmark. That way, cavalry could actually scout and send back a useful report when they spot the enemy. And round 3 could be actually reporting on the enemy's observed strength and direction of travel. Having this kind of information coming to the commander/player would make this a unique game.2. Lots of 'enemy sighted' reports, which i was delighted to see, but they only say 'in the vicinity'. I can make this march and I will make Georgia howl.

ill tack another question onto that, the old problem that when you TC'd a unit, you got all of your own orders as messages, now happens for all generals even when you dont TC them? How come?
Re: Division Move problem and 'enemy sighted reports'
thanks MTG, yep, i really liked the new messages, especially the 'have engaged the enemy' ones.con20or wrote:In the options screen set the difficulty level to Custom. As for the couriers, I have it set to brigade already, and couriers do go to brigade generals every time i give them an individual order. The problem comes when giving a division, corps or army move order. Maybe i should set the courier option to corp?

Re: Division Move problem and 'enemy sighted reports'
The bug that I was referring to was the one in which the player gets a copy of his own order he sent to his subordinate.
But now that you mentioned the other item...twice.. I see that the DG toolbar does work the way you stated. I don't think I've ever been a DG and used the DG buttons when playing anything other than the Normal setting. In fact, I cobbled up a toolbar that does away with nearly everything at the bottom of the screen. That way there is never a temptation to push a button in historic mode.
Hear that RebBugler? NO TOOLBAR!

:woohoo:Hear that RebBugler? NO TOOLBAR!
Toolbar = Weapons of War...More, Bigger, Better

But courier play is cool, however with very slow gameplay...each to their own.

leaving buttons aside, the new movement map can get you too.
glad to hear im not going crazy, i really think its something that needs fixing for courier play.

Re: Division Move problem and 'enemy sighted reports'
I was playing last night on historical, as division commander, hunt them down, alpine map sandbox. I had 5 infantry brigades and 5 batteries.
I had moved my troops along three different routes scouting(any of you who have played alpine know how big the map is), but i as divisional commander obviously got to the objective way ahead of them, galloping. I saw the union troops coming in the distance, and to test my theory, i double clicked my self on the spot, then division double line, then double time. Sure enough, my troops came running right to that spot from all over the map, as though telepathic (they were all knackered by the time they got there, the union cavalry charged them and massacred - them i was very impressed, my first encounter with cavalry).
If i had selected an individual commander, then ordered him there, couriers would have been involved. I'd like to hear from someone on the dev team about this, get their opinion?
