Hi.
I know very little of any General in the American Civilwar, so what I have to say on the matter should fall on deaf ears. I'm reading a couple of pages of Larry Taggs book about Major General Meade, and I have to tell you from the first few paragraphs about this man I have to say I'm impressed. It's obvious that he didn't have a care in the world while most men would run for cover while he just sat there doing what he does best (being cool under fire, etc), and doesn't appear to move until he is finished his business while bullets are whizzing by his head.
So what is your opinion on Major General Meade?
Later!

Hi, I checked on Amazon- there were great books written by U.S Grant, Robert E. Lee and Gen. Sherman- I know that all three should be available- I have not read them but have them on a wish list. I love the History Channel- Military History Channel mainly has the great Civil War combat programs- I only wish they would do more then just the handful- The Wheatfield is very memorable- 1-2nd days of Gettysburg- Sickles lost the limb

be aware that few books of this sort will come out and really trash their subject. I realize there may be one or two that do (and publicize this heavily) but generally you won't find someone devoting years of their life researching something only to go out and paint a poor image of the person/event/etc.
Meade, from what I have gathered, was an average commander at best. He was arguably pretty solid, but nothing outstanding, although I haven't done any real research on him. The general opinion I have gleaned is "He also suffered from a reputation as a man of short, violent temper who was hostile toward the press and received hostility in return."

"The time for compromises is past, and we are now determined to maintain our position and make all who oppose us smell Southern powder, feel Southern steel."

Hi, I thought this was on Civil War books- I listed my top picks- salute - Culp's Hill was more great fighting at Gettysburg as well as Jeb Stuart's attempt to attack the Union rear complementing Picket's charge

I was reading the very same thing in the book. I wonder who the press wish to be friendly with, Meade, or Sherman? I know Sherman would have had them all shot for being spies. I would have to say that the press did more harm than good (the press today hasn't changed any, they still give away secrets), oh well.
