Gettysburg Country Club

Post by Amish John »

Just a note to advise I was in the GB anniversary Battlewalk on Friday morning that toured the newly acquired 95 acres of the former GB country club. It's been about 3 years since the course has been in use and nature is starting to take it back. The whole place looks more like grassy fields than a golf course. The three hour tour was conducted by John Heiser and Scott Hartwick. The NPS plans to rehabilitate the land as much as possible to its 1863 appearance after the necessary studies are done. I wouldn't look for much to be done before five years. It appears the Google Earth view was taken while it was still an active golf course.

I'm envious. I'm in California and most likely will never see Gettysburg. :(

Just several hours by air. You have to see it at least once.

Its easy - I did it from the UK a few years ago!

Day 1 Get a flight to Washington
Hire a car
Gentle drive to Manassas to stay the night at marvelous B and B I can recommend (well I was jetlagged)
Day 2 Tour round Manassas battlefield - back to Manassas for dinner and another night
Day 3 Drive to Antietam - tour battlefield - drive on to Gettysberg in evening
Day 4 Hire a private guide who will drive you round in your own car to get the overall view.
Stay in town that night
Day 5 Play in Gettysberg - walk the battlefields, visit the center etc

Ater that I drove down the Blue Ridge Mountains overlooking the Shenendoah valley then on to Richmond
Back to Washington stopping at Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville. Its all possible in a few days although I would advise more than a week. It was one of the best holday I ever had!

Just plan a few days off and make the trip - you'll never regret it!
regards to all

Meanwhile, you can keep up with the local politics and goings-on with the Park Service by going to borovent.com . It's a much more accurate way of finding out what the park is actually doing, as opposed to what they say they do/will do.

Thanks. I wasn't aware of that.

Some of you may not be aware of the following NPS Gettysburg blog. The current subject is the Harman farm which was on the recently acquired country club property.
