Help! No Sound

Post by Boyd »

Okay, I"m at wits end. I no longer get any sounds. :( No intro music, no battle sounds, no ambient noises. Nothing, nada, zilch. :pinch: Well, actually I do get a little background static when I launch the game as if its trying to play something.

Background: Previously I was using Realtek for sound and wasn't getting anything from it either when playing SOW. My other games such as AGEOD's ACW however played sounds just fine. I also could communicate via Teamspeak and it worked fine. So after reading some of the posts about a compatibility issue or something between SOW and Realtek I went ahead and bought a new sound board (Creative Labs Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium). When I installed it everything worked! :woohoo: I now had music, battle sounds, everything! :woohoo: It was great. ...but after 4-5 days it happened again  ....nothing. NO music, sounds, noises..nothing at all. And it's just with SOW. I can still play any of my other games, chat on Teamspeak, listen to music files etc and it works fine. I can even go into SOW subfolders and click on the individual sound files themselves and they will play. Its just when I'm launching and in SOW that I'm having problems. Again the static will start once the game launches ...as if something is trying to play.

I'm not a techy so any ideas etc would be appreciated. I've even tried reinstalling the 1.2 patch and that didn't work. Any suggestions anyone??

thx!

Hi Boyd.

I had a very similar experience back about 5 months ago. My sound stopped working, and what you described I was also able play the individual sounds with no problems, I was also able to get sounds to play in other games, but not SOWgb.

For me I soon discovered I picked up (accidentally) a piece of Malware that played havoc with my system. By the time I found it the damage was already done, and I had to install a fresh copy of windows.

(BASIC First Steps)

I would suggest that you do a complete scan of your system with an Anti-Malware product, an Anti-Spyware product, and lastly a Anti-Virus program.

Download the latest sound drivers for your card. Install, reboot system

(If this doesn't correct anything)

1: Deactivate your Scourge of War - Gettysburg Game. (VERY IMPORTANT!!!)
2: Uninstall Scourge of War Gettysburg Game.
3: Delete the NorbsoftDev directory.
4: Uninstall your sound drivers for your sound card.
5: If you have a registry restore point before you installed Scourge of War Gettysburg, then do the registry restore.
6: Reboot
7: In Start menu select (bottom Left) select Accessories, then System Tools, select "Disk Cleanup"
select the drive C: or D: whatever you have your system installed, put a tick in every box, then select ok.
8: Defragment your Harddrive (please do this, no matter even if it is not needed)
9: Install Latest Sound Card drivers.
10: Install Scourge of War Gettysburg

Try out the game in Demo mode just to be sure that it is working.

I am somewhat sure this can help you. I may have missed a step somewhere there, not sure. I do know there are a number of other things I could have you do like getting into the registry, and twiddle about in there, but since you do not know all that much about this, I decided to leave this out.

I sure hope this helps....

Mikesla, thanks soo much for your help. I completed all the steps below that you lined out and after each individual step I checked the sound to see when it worked. The sound and music finally came back on after I deleted and reinstalled the game. I'm wondering now if any of the mods or the GCM launcher caused a conflict. I'm going to reinstall the mods and the GCM launcher one at a time to see. I've also been playing in several MP games and I wonder if the host player's computer can do something to turn off my sound. I'll update later with what I find.

thx again!

Hi Boyd, This is very good news. I was thinking about your problem last night, and what else I could have come up with if those things didn't work.

The one thing about computers is, it could be almost anything that can cause these things. Mainly the cause of these things is a virus, or some malware, or the antivirus program can isolate a required .dll, or a simple driver conflict. I can't say for sure because there are so many things that can go wrong with the PC (mass amounts of drivers, hardware etc).

I am so very happy you finally have it working.

Cheers, and take care Boyd, and have a grand day on the battlefield. :)

I don't play Multiplayer (dialup you see), but I think it only has to do with the level of graphics (I could be wrong though).

Cheers...

Like I mentioned earlier that I do not play MP, but I thought I would download the GCM_Platte program, and take a very quick gander. Here is some of the GCM settings....

I'm not sure if this installs a mod, or simply messes with your SOWgb.ini, or installs a nulled music file. Only Garnier can answers this one.

Later.

HI Mikesla,

I noticed that too. I did select those two options at one pont. I also expected the optin to turn the sounds back on, but you can't.

Also, after selecting "Turn Music Off" i noticed in the sounds folder the music sub-folder was renamed "Music_backup" ...or something like that. I didn't notice any renaming changes to the battle sounds folder. Also, when I tried to rename "Music_backup" to "Music" nothing happened.

but like you say, only Garnier can answer.

thx,Boyd

Hi Boyd.

I'm really sorry I can't answer this one for you. This is Garnier's area, and I have no place to meddle in his affairs when it comes to his software. All I can do is offer up a suggestion to not use it for now. It could be something that he may not be aware of, and requires fixing. Send off a post in the GCM Forum category, and alert him to the problem.

I am happy that you are able to play the game. :)

Cheers, and take care.
