Demo Before Buying: Take Command Issues

Game won't run. Keeps crashing. Hopefully we won't get any posts here, but if we do, we'll try to help you out. You can also post any bugs that you find here. IMPORTANT: Don't post mod related problems here!

Demo Before Buying: Take Command Issues

Post by jfabs09 »

Alright, so I've got the Demo here and I've been playing the Corps Tutorial to get a feel for the game. I played TC2M and loved it so I figured this was the logical choice when it comes to gaming and I've gotta say that so far I am rather impressed save for one thing: What on Earth is up with the Take Command(TC) button in this game?!

I have found myself time and again watching my Artillery Batteries limber up and go to move away when I just placed them into position with both their Battery Commander TC'd and the Artillery Division's Commander TC'd. Same deal with Infantry Brigades who have been TC'd, sometimes they just get and change formation as they please and move around as they please.

Anybody else have a similar experience or any ideas about this? It is honestly ruining my experience here and I'm not sure if the game is worth owning if I can't actually TC my units as I am a very hands on player.

Something's amiss. TC works for SOW the same as it did with TC2M. Maybe you got a corrupt download or install, only thing I can think of. Please download and install again, and let us know.

Once officers are TC'd, their sub units should not move on their own, yet they will defend themselves.

That's not a corrupt download. A corrupt download would almost certainly prevent the game from working -- not just cause odd AI behavior.

@jfabs09
You TCed a battery commander, and placed the battery somewhere, and then the guns got up and left? Were there enemies very close? I believe guns sometimes run away from enemy infantry that get too close.

As for infantry themselves, the infantry regiments change into line on their own and sometimes stop moving, and wheel back and forth when the enemy is close, even if the brigade commander is TCed. If you want the infantry regiments to not move at all without your orders, you can TC the individual regiments.

Same with guns, if you don't want them to turn the guns back and forth, or change ammo type, or unlimber on their own, you can TC individual guns. (I don't usually do this though.)

Right, I realize that if the units are not TC'd they will defend themselves, wheeling to meet the enemy and so forth. But whole batteries were simply choosing another place to deploy. There was no immediate threat to the batteries that would require them retreating, they moved together with their commander who simply chose another place to deploy. Messed up indeed. Really thinking that a full re-install is required??

Ah, you're talking artillery battalions. Yes, even with the division level commander TC'd the batteries will be stubborn to comply when the enemy is within LOS. We have a new command, TCofficers, that helps here. Give the division command move formation, then hit TCofficers, and they will obey. I have that command modded on my toolbar, or you can assign it to the keyboard.

I wouldn't reinstall, as I said this can't be a corrupt download.

I believe the demo is from an older version of the game. I know my batteries never redeploy on their own when I TC them. I do use mods, but I assumed it's the same in the unmodded game.

Do you play with couriers so that when you give an order, they only start following it when the courier arrives? This might make it confusing and cause you to think they're TCed when they aren't.

When they're TCed, the little yellow flag should be highlighted on the toolbar when you select them.

No couriers, and yea the little yellow flag was highlighted at one point but when I found them moving on their own, it was no longer highlighted but I never un-TC'd them. Regardless, if this isn't an issue for anybody else that actually owns the game then I'm sure it won't be an issue once I own the full version. For now I suppose I'll just cope with it in the demo and keep a closer eye on everyone.

I've never had an issue with TC'd artillery batteries taking off in the full game and I've used the entire AOP artillery reserve in battles. I have had units that were not TC'd do incredible bizarre and non-historical, non-doctrinal, messed up, out of any sane military persons mind type of actions. Just wait until you have to deal with the zone of control issue, don't play close enough attention to a unit, and it takes a hike around an entire division or corps to go 100 feet forward.
