Saw it last night and it was excellent, as I expected it would be. If Daniel Day-Lewis doesn't win the Oscar for best actor there is something seriously wrong with the entertainment industry. Although I fear that he did not slay enough Vampires to really capture the hearts of most Americans.

Day Lewis was phenomenal. Everything I have always pictured Lincoln to be, Day-Lewis portrayed it perfectly. His mannerism's.. His sense of humor.. His unique ability to be very stern in situations, yet still keeping that gentle kindness. I can see how it would be a little difficult for non-history buffs to follow. The dialogue is very fast at times, and of course the period language. But if you have followed that time period (as I have for most of my adult life) you shouldn't have a problem.

Go see it so you can think back "I'm glad I saw that movie in the theater". Five stars from me.

Saw it Saturday night, and it WAS excellent. The portrait of Lincoln is uncanny, certainly, and I agree that Day-Lewis is a shoo-in for Best Actor. What is also great about the movie is that it's about back-room politics in the days of the spoils system. It's talk-y, but it was immersive for the entire time.
I've been watching the gestation of this movie for about five years, since I was writing my Lincoln book--I actually thought they'd come out about the same time, but Speilberg dawdled.
A few years ago I corresponded with Tony Kushner, the screenwriter--who is the genius behind this movie, in my opinion--and I sent him the chapter in my book about how Lincoln talked (high-pitched voice, ungrammatical, Kentucky accent), sat (feet high up, according to his belief that tall people should keep their extremities above their torso), and walked (he put his whole foot down at the same time). Whether it was my contribution or not, they all showed up in the movie.

Thats the one. I'm a proud owner of that book and its a good one. I highly recommend picking it up, and not just because Larry is my friend and fellow NSD team member.

I can't wait to see this one! I've had multiple friends and coworkers ask me if I've seen Skyfall, yet every time I reply with 'anyone seen Lincoln?' all I get are puzzled expressions. I'm going to have to wheedle my wife into going to see it with me so I'll have someone to actually talk with about the movie. Hopefully this weekend 'There Will Be Lincoln'!

The movie is made by the politics. Although the bit about Lincoln is illuminating and touching, the real purpose of the movie is to show what 19th Century politics were like; and how similar/different they are to today.

I heartily recommend it to the history buff as well as to anyone interested in politics.

And watch Skyfall, first. You won't be displeased - although I still think they need to get rid of Daniel Craig and find someone better.
