Advice wanted on buying new PC in UK

Here you can talk about whatever floats your boat. Your favorite movie, sports team, etc. If it's a little racey, I suggest you post in R&R, otherwise we'll move it for you.

Advice wanted on buying new PC in UK

Post by Blaugrana »

I'm thinking of buying a desktop PC to improve performance playing SoW (and WoT) and wondered if anyone had any advice on reasonably priced PCs in the UK that would be an improvement on my current Sony laptop with an AMD Athlon(tm) II P340 Dual-Core Processor (2 CPUs), ~2.2GHz and an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4200 Series video card.

Thanks for any advice.

Since you are looking at a desktop, consider building one. It is not a technically demanding job at all. For $12-1300 you can create a top of the line machine.
I can make this march and I will make Georgia howl.

I have used two methods well in the past.

I have bought a PC from an HP or Dell, then upgraded it myself. I make sure it has the motherboard & chip I want. Then I can upgrade it from NewEgg.

I've also built it myself, you can get a great list of parts from your PCGamer, they always have good builds.

Currently I have both types running very well in my house. Buy from HP or Dell is usually cheaper, because when I build my own I always end up buying top of the line parts which can get expensive.

Building your own machine is best, but as mentioned, can get pricey.

To get the best bang for the buck I recommend getting a refurbished PC with Win 7. New PC's only offer Win 8 now, and Win 7 is a proven OS for PC gaming. From my experiences with purchases, refurbished PCs are new, just dated, usually just a couple of years. I recently purchased a HP refurb from NewEgg, and it runs SOW great!

Lol!

I'm guessing maybe he has a specific PC spec in mind that a WOT player would need.

Or maybe this is just the OT post of the century :)

B,

Take the time to hunt around. RB is right - I bought a refurbished HP comp with outstanding specs for (wait for it) $379.00. Runs all my stuff, especially THE GAME, superbly. I would love to build one, but really don't have the time.

Comp came with an ATI Radeon 2400 card, 8 Gigs of RAM, HUGE harddrive and Quad Processer. Ready to go right out of the box.

Get some!

Thanks all for the advice. I can't see myself building a PC but will look at that forum, Conor, to get a feel for the parameters I need to look at.

I'm really hoping someone in the UK will say "go to X, they've got this great PC - .... - which will meet your needs and costs next to nothing!" :)

t-storm wasn't off-topic, btw, it was my fault - I did mention World of Tanks (aka WoT) as it is proving very addictive and I have now started imagining that my lousy win rate is due to a low FPS ...

Thanks again all - I'll post if and when I get a new PC.
