How to use the map in Gettysburg/Antietam Games?
How to use the map in Gettysburg/Antietam Games?
I enjoy playing Gettysburg/Antietam Scourge of War and am getting somewhat better at the rudimentary skills: carefully studying the objectives before doing anything and moving my forces reasonably well to where I want them to go but: how can I better use the map available? It seems the map is not compass oriented or what am I missing. I find it difficult sometimes to move toward objectives in a timely manner. Any ideas or tutorials available would be appreciated.

Hmm, I'm not too sure about how to answer this question, the Map and Compass works very well together. How can I better use the map available? It seems the map is not compass oriented or what am I missing. I find it difficult sometimes to move toward objectives in a timely manner. Any ideas or tutorials available would be appreciated.
Some of the maps even have a NSEW at the top of them to help you to navigate around the map.
Perhaps, instead of concentrating on the fighting you might need to spend a few hours just moving the men around the map.
I'm not really telling you anything that you don't know but it takes several hundred hours of playing to get good at moving and fighting on these maps.

Terry4 - Hey, here is another idea.....
If you would like I could take your pick of an OOB and remove 99% of the enemy units from it.
Then you would start a game and un-check the Balance Forces so that your army still has all of it's units available.
This would allow you to concentrate on just marching and moving your units without having to fight a size-able enemy force.
This would also allow you to practice dividing your army by moving down different roads, and then testing how much time it takes to bring them back together.

Re: How to use the map in Gettysburg/Antietam Games?
Ok I'm learning a lot from the replies; thanks. I played a Gettysburg battle on Cemetery Hill and won a decisive victory and had no real problems moving my forces. When I have a problem is when I am far removed from the enemy; I look at the map, and when I see they appear to be due SW from my location and I think I'm directing them SW to the enemy; I check the map and I'm headed in the WRONG DIRECTION! Any ideas on how this is happening and how to better use the map in directing my forces. I have an average ability to use maps. Maybe that is my challenge?
Re: How to use the map in Gettysburg/Antietam Games?
The picture that I'm posting below shows the Brigade of General Kemper marching South-West towards the enemy that is circled in blue. When I have a problem is when I am far removed from the enemy; I look at the map, and when I see they appear to be due SW from my location and I think I'm directing them SW to the enemy; I check the map and I'm headed in the WRONG DIRECTION!
Although My destination is South the road-system might take the unit in a different direction at first. So in order to march South, I must first march South-West.
Instead of concentrating on the enemy units, try concentrating on which-road will get you closer to the enemies front and flank.
I don't think that you are doing anything wrong , I just think that You need more practice with moving your units around on the map.
***Remember - The Compass shows the 'Direction' of the selected unit only, so it will constanly change.

Hey, will something like this help you to navigate better?
I did a google search to find a Civil War Pocket Compass.
This one will not rotate but points NSEW when used with the Jump-Map.

Thanks, I'll try that' have been off line for awhile but will get back on soon.
Re: How to use the map in Gettysburg/Antietam Games?
Thanks once again Davinci! I am improving a bit just by playing more. I may take you up on your offer if I get to a "brick wall".
Re: How to use the map in Gettysburg/Antietam Games?
What is the jump map you refer to? Be more specific in how to use both watches if you would be willing. Thanks ahead of time if you do.
