can anyone point me to more info on how the Command Map differs in use to the standard map (hotkey M).
Also does it need to be activated in some way, I note the other players in my group do not have the feature (eg pressing N does not bring it up)

Mmoveto is the Command Map toggle. Set that command up for any available key in your Keyboard.csv file located in the Work folder.
I have it set up for the space bar, e.g., command map, space, Mmoveto. But I don't use it because it's on my B&F toolbar.

With the normal map (M) you can just look at the map.
With the command map (N): When you click on the map, the previously selected unit and all its subordinate units will move there (using the formation they are currently in).
