Major Game Bug

Game won't run. Keeps crashing. Hopefully we won't get any posts here, but if we do, we'll try to help you out. You can also post any bugs that you find here. IMPORTANT: Don't post mod related problems here!

Major Game Bug

Post by The Grey Ghost »

I currently have the Scourge of War: Gettysburg demo (though I wish to get the full game soon) and a Windows 8 PC. When I start the game, everything's fine and good, however, when I start a battle, the placement of troops cross through each other, troops on opposite sides placed next to each other won't fight, 90% troops won't respond to courier messages. Game is essentially unplayable. Is there any way to fix this?

The game can max-out and not run properly on some corps or army level sandbox battles, guess this is what you're seeing. Haven't heard about the overlapping issues in quite a while, so maybe it's exclusive to the demo.

Regardless, if you see this as a Major Game Bug, it may be because your computer is struggling to keep up.

Got it. I have been doing mostly army/corps battles, so that could be the source of the problem. I'd have to try it out with a divison or regiment battle before I can say for sure though. Thanks!

The overlapping placement will occur periodically when the sandbox is creating large corps or army-sized games. When the program initially places the troops on the field the map is not flat. Instead it is formed into a cylinder. So if there is not enough room for the troops, due to hitting the edge of the map, it starts placing them on the opposite side, where the other army is likely to be. The only solution is to keep restarting the sandbox game until you get a set up that doesn't overlap.

The slowness is due to the fact that you have more troops on the field than your computer can handle. You'll need to reduce the size of the battle, or buy a computer with more horsepower.

I see. I tried all different battles, and for the regiment, division, and corps battles, the opposite army didn't show up. Just my regiment/division/corps on it's own. Just moving around. Is the overlapping a cause or effect of what's going on? Because I wouldn't mind (too much) if they were overlapping as long as they were to realize that their enemy is literally right in their face and fight them. My largest problem here is that they don't.

The units are fighting. But since the computer is spending nearly all its time doing calculations and not updating the screen, you can't tell.

Got it. Would you say that's the case for all battles, regiment/division/corps battles as well? Or is that a different problem?

It's a function of how many men are on the field. Start with a battle of one division per side and see how smoothly it plays. Then keep increasing it the size by one division per side till you reach a point where combat noticeably slows down. That will be the battle size limit for your computer.
