Formations Mod

Post by Grog »

Hi

A small mod for the vanilla SOWWL game which spreads out columns and makes the AI use more columns of attack in the approach. Also uses company of columns for Brits on the approach.

Less criss cross lines and better transition between formations.

Not had rigorous testing but interested in some feedback.

Drawback. Less ordered units on road march.

Unzip into Mods folder. I expect you will have to initiate it then resign for its first run, as with other mods.

I think it will run with RebBuglers Grog mod.

Excellent. Much more realistic and believable formation behaviour at all levels.

I can't get it to work, it doesn't show up in the mods page so I can't initiate it. Is there meant to be a txt file in the mods folder?

I had the same problem. I removed the "v 1.00" from the name of the unzipped folder and then it appeared in the games mod list after resigning and restarting.

Thanks, I just figured it out. I`m getting some strange result with phantom battalions appearing when forming line formation & some not forming squares.

I didn't notice any issues like that. The unit behaviour does seem to be more sensible now. I'm still trying it out, but it seems to be a step in the right direction, though.

Many thanks, Grog.

I've had one sandbox using this mod (yes, remove the 1.00 from the mod directory name to get it to show up).

There seems to be less of the tangles and confusion at the start of a line of sight sandbox battle, and I didn't notice any ill effects.

Thanks for the mod Grog!

It's all working well now apart from some of the battalion lines merging into each other when I put them into line formation, I think the battalions didn't have time to form square

Sorry about that chaps. I'll re-upload it after work. Thanks for the feedback.
Putting the formations together was not as straightforward as I anticipated. Keep em coming :-)

The changes I've noticed during last nights brigade v brigade sandbox:

- Brigade formation changes are much less chaotic.

- Brigades keep formation better while moving. In contact they maintain a good stable front line with reserves.

- Regiments no longer break that front line by constantly wheeling as they are no longer adjusting-readjusting to threats every 10 seconds.

- The decision-move cycle seems much slower, more deliberate, real (ie you cant give a formation of 100's of men a quick succession of orders/counter orders without causing disorder!)

These changes make all the difference!
