WL08 The Young Guard

Post by Russkly »

Hi.

Anyone else had problems winning this scenario?

SPOILERS:

I've played this through 20 times or so, and never got more than 943 points (2000 required for Major Victory, 1500 for Minor).

The time limit of 30 minutes means you have to press hard, and the only way to earn that amount of points is to take and hold the church in the centre of the Plancenoit.

That's tough in 30 minutes, when the church is occupied and supported by other infantry on both flanks.

I've tried everything I can think of, but I've never even got a unit into the church!

Any tips or guidance, please, because it's driving me mad!!!

I try to clear the village using one brigade and push to the west of that toward the church with the other brigade. Also, you have three batteries (not two) at your command.I bring a couple up to support the left brigade and the other to the hill on the right.

I've even sent a request for support from Jacquino's light cavalry division and he came to my aid driving of the Prussian cavalry and pinning the infantry in squares. I think you need to melee aggressively to get to the church in time.

Thx for replying, Deeter.

I've pretty much tried multiple iterations of just that strategy plus many others! 1 brigade along the right of the valley and the other along the left to attack the church.

Arty in close support, often firing canister.

Also tried whole div. down the right, and then swing left across the river to the church with arty in support on both sides of the valley.

Also tried whole div. down the left, driving straight for the church.

Also tried getting the cav. on my right flank to intervene, but it seems that that action is only triggered by events and cannot be ordered by Duhesme.

Whatever I do, even when I make good progress clearing the Prussian inf. out of the way, I cannot shift the unit(s) holding the church.

Given the time limit, it means attacking very aggressively, which means high casualties, so the only way to gain a victory is to seize the church. That only yields 100 points per minute, so you need 15 minutes to get a minor victory, leaving only 15 minutes to capture the church.

No chance.

How you're supposed to get the 2000 points required for a major victory is way beyond me.

I reckon you need more time and/or some cav.

I'd like some input from the scenario designer or play testers, please!!! I'm frustrated...
