Speed of Movement of artillery

Post by mcaryf »

With relatively limited experience my impression with the unmodified game is that all artillery moves at more or less the same speed regardless of whether it is Foot or Horse 12lb or 6lb. Am I correct in this? If not what are the differentials? If I am correct, has anybody produced a mod to create differentials?

Regards

Yes, and all artillery is route like cavalry units, it's very hard to pursue artillery.

Foot artillery really ought to move at the same speed regardless of the weight of guns since the heavier guns had bigger horse teams and when in action the heavier guns had larger crews. Artillery could also call on nearby infantry units to do any of the heavy haulage work if the ground was steep or sticky. So to have all foot guns move at the same speed isn't a bad thing, I don't think.

Remember also that in a road march column the guns need to keep up with the infantry, at least in a tactical situation represented in SOW. On a campaign strategic speed they might well be slower, dependent on weather conditions and the quality of the road surface.

I don't play the stock game so I can't say if horse artillery moves faster or not, but I'd be very surprised if it didn't. Bear in mid though that the game isn't a generic Napoleonic war simulation but a simulation of the battle of Waterloo so its not that unreasonable, given the soft ground conditions, that NSD chose to slow horse artillery down.

The KS Mod makes a very clear distinction between the speeds of foot, horse and siege artillery.
HITS & Couriers - a different and realistic way to play SoW MP.

Hi Saddletank
I have looked into the UnitGlobal file that comes with the edit suite and you are right in that 6Lb and 12lb have the same speed = 2 (walk), 2.5 (mid), 3 (run) whilst HA has 4 / 8 / 12. This is what it should be Mercer's account indicates that his HA battery could move at speed on the field of Waterloo. Of course the area of the battle was very constricted at Waterloo so even the Field Artillery appears to be able to change position relatively quickly

I understand your logic about guns having to keep pace with infantry on a campaign but that was often achieved by letting the guns use the road or track whilst infantry went through the fields.

For Jacquinot I should say that the speeds for cavalry are 4 / 9.5 / 15 so they should be able to catch Field Artillery easily but have more of a chase with HA.

regards

Mike
