Fighting the actual whole battle

Post by mcaryf »

Is there any way without constructing my own mod to fight the actual battle as either side with the OOB's and initial deployments and reinforcements that are historically accurate?

I had reached about 3.30 pm fighting as the French and with over 20k points when Grouchy turned up accompanied by rather more Prussians than I expected which was not actually what I wanted.

Yes, you can reload the scenario once you've completed it. :)

The battle will play out slightly different every time, with the highest probability of the historic outcome. It's a slim chance, but it looks like you got a Grouchy variant..

This keeps things interesting and allows for practically unlimited replay value. Like I mentioned, the next time you play you're most likely to get a more historical outcome.

Hi Little Powell

Thank you for your response.

Should I take it that the scenario variant is not fixed right at the beginning? Thus, for example, if I reload my save from 3 pm then Grouchy plus the hoard of Prussians might not arrive at 3.30 pm on a second run through.

I was rather baffled by Grouchy's actual arrival as he entered from near the NE corner of the map whilst Blucher came via his traditional Eastern route to the South of that. In theory Grouchy's columns must have passed in front of or through those of Blucher somewhere between Wavre and Plancenoit. The Emperor was annoyed that Grouchy appeared to have had a late breakfast but for this North Easterly appearance he must have marched all night!!

The variant is fixed when the scenario loads. So to get a different variant, you will have to start from scratch.

Hi Little Powell

Thank you for your answer, I had in fact found that by experimentation.

If I want to make sure my 8 hours is spent fighting the historical battle I guess I should save the scenario immediately and let the AI slug it out for 4 or 5 hours and then come back and see which forces turned up in the PM. Once I have a reasonable historical match then I can use that initial "save" to give me the start point for repeated attempts of trying to beat history.

You can win the battle without Grouchy forces.

Hi Jacquinot

I had intended to do that and leave Grouchy idle but unfortunately there were a lot of extra Prussians as well - I guess Grouchy not being at Wavre meant they could all come to Waterloo.

I have just gone through the scenario for another 5 hours and Grouchy turned up again!! This time a bit later at 4.30pm instead of 3.30pm. This was last night in my own real time so I switched it off and went to bed before finding out what Prussians came this time. I will do that later.

Just a minor weakness/bug the saved game list does not seem to understand the 24 hour clock and sorts games saved at, for example, 2200 hours as being earlier than those at 7.30.

Having encountered Grouchy twice I investigated the scenario file for WL10 the whole battle as the French. I was disappointed to find that the OOB in the scenario file has only Von Bulow's IVth Corps for the Prussians so I guess there is no variation on the size of the Prussian force that can arrive.

Unless the scenario file I have is not the one actually used in the game this cannot give an accurate representation of the battle or indeed any great variety. This seems a shame as the OOB's that are called AM and PM Waterloo at first glance do appear to be reasonably accurate.

Were the two whole battle scenarios effectively not quite finished before the game was launched or am I doing something wrong? Knowing nothing about modding the game this may be a silly question but is there any simple way of swapping in a better OOB?

I can't understand in 10th scenario we have Grouchy forces?

If you want add more Prussians, you need open scenario editor, open 10th scenario, and add Prussian troops from base OOB to OOB on field, after that place them on positions choose time when they come on field and orders to action.
