Why is the Bayonet being shortaned?

This has been bugging me fore ages why is the modern military not using long bayonets the whole reason they were long in the first place was for a fear effect> You'll run away from a long shimmering bayonet held by a screaming soldier but you would stand your ground if someone came at you with a small bayonet. If you think you know why we have left the large bayonet then reply. Also what is your favorite kind of bayonet.
I prefer the bayonet the british attached to the end of there Lee Enfields during WWI.

Some units in the US military carry military grade tomahawks instead of combat knives because the tomahawk is much more intimidating weapon than a knife and because the middle eastern culture respects the ax more than the knife.

Because in modern warfare the bayonet is useless. They had their last charade in WW1 with over-the-top massive bayonet charges. The armies learned their lessons not to do that because of massive casualties, (except the Japanese, Koreans, Chinese, and Russians).

First of all, what are you talking about? Shorten the page width? The width looks ok to me.. Are you referring to the width of the picture in his signature?

Oh well the us military is not taking to many casualties even though people think we are losing men all the time 4,000 ( which is a rough estimate) is not that much is nothing. people have become to soft and need to learn not to dwell on it and just accept the fact that those soldiers went over there hopefully knowing that they were going to die some time. That is what a soldier means and how he is supposed to operate knowing that he is already dead so that death doesn't break you down and cause you to get a general arrested for slapping you because you didn't want to accept what will happen (in the case of Patton slapping a soldier). About bayonets I see what you mean the fighting will never end in the middle east so what is the use of something that will not do jack in a situation where enemy dicides to kill himself any way since he doesn't care.

And kellysheroes I don't give a damn if you have to scroll over you'll have to scroll over on any sight for reading just don't get pissy about it I have to experience pain all day so lets leave it at that and never mention scrolling over again because I can't help and nor do I care I have no feeling for other people any more now lets stop talking about this.

What browser are you using kh? I don't have to scroll in opera, scroll bar doesn't even show up as the page fits fine. I'm not sure why you are having issues.

he's probably using IE6; i have it here at work (need it for web testing purposes) and Chamberlain's pic is huge, making it necessary to scroll to the right to read messages. At home i use IE7, and the pic is considerably smaller.

ah, the minor differences in browser versions, gotta love 'em.

I see, his signature picture is the issue then. I just opened in IE and see the issue. Somehow the board template is messing with the picture. It's a cool picture

Actually, I seem to recall a bayonet charge being made by U.S. forces during the Korean War. Can't remember the particulars, but it seems lack of ammunition....similar perhaps to Chamberlain. Will have to research this some more.
