NY Cav,
And going to 200 yards from the saddle greatly decreases the excessive scouting we've been seeing and makes it possible to move "unseen."
We're going to take it lower once the new guys get used to playing with restricted sight.

Re: Wondering why we use bare map
I think we should also consider re-adopting TS discipline. With that said, however, we still need to find a way to introduce cavalry. If we as commanders can't see, we ought to have proper scouts who can. Perhaps make it a check-able option for people's divisions? I think we would want to limit it to 1 group (not sure what size) per side per battle. The people that choose cav cannot use infantry, and artillery is their choice. I dunno just throwing ideas out - there is more historical flavor to be had here, for sure.

TS discipline, for those who don't know, means you can only talk to other commanders who are next to your commander in game.
What exact rules for TS are you proposing Parker?
And the infantry commanders can scout just as well as cavalry commanders could. They all ride the same speed and have same LOS.

The TS discipline rule would mean you can only speak to someone when your avatar is next to theirs on the battlefield. This will likely prove less useful for this sort of gameplay, though. When we had a formal campaign before and a battle set out, it was useful to bring everyone together at the beginning to discuss a plan. As is for this, it can be very difficult, if not impossible, to devise a plan at the outset.
Further, with a blank map and a 200 yd radius, it will be very difficult to communicate once combat starts. While realistic, this butts up against realism vs playability, and may prove prohibitive for some players. Ultimately, I'm not sure, I was jsut throwing it out there.
And I wasn't referring to scouting with commanders. That's historical silliness but is used/abused by all alike (even the AI). I want actual cav units out front screening and scouting, as would have been properly done. Eyes and Ears of the army and all that. That would make the blank map/restricted view much more exciting, in my opinion.

It would be nice if cavalry had that role, but since officers perform it so well already, they really wouldn't Cavalry would have a few roles: getting in the way of the enemy to hold good ground til the infantry come up, and dashing in and stealing cannons.
But regardless of how they'd be used, there are a multitude of other problems with adding them to the campaign, I listed all of these here once and no one said anything more as I recall.

Okay - Great comments everyone. Here's another idea (Oh God, he's at it again...). Actual Supply trains. I've been tinkering with this a bit and got it to work in SP. If you want, take all the supply wagons away from the divisons or you can create more by simply copying them. Make a "Division" out of them, like the Arty battalions. Use, say, four of them and keep them back from the lines. Gives "Supply Lines" and "Lines of Communication" a whole new meaning. Also, great for cavalry raiding or as a "roving" objective for whatever number of points you want to assign. Like real commanders, you'd have to assign a guard detail (maybe) to keep them from being riden away with by damned cavalry raiders.

That's nice for playing in singleplayer, but there's nothing to stop players from splitting the wagons up and/or putting them at the front line.
