Scenario Generator for Scourge of War

This is where our experts try to teach you the very flexible modding system for our previous release - SOW Gettysburg and its add-ons. It's powerful, but dangerous. Post your tips and your questions.

Are you eventually going to release a version which will not require the need for Excel?

I don't mind having to select where the units start. I just put them in opposite diagonal corners. And putting an objective in the middle, close to you or close to the AI helps to determine whether it is an encounter, defend or attack type battle. The road network on the map also has an effect on who gets there firstus with the mostus.

And I recognize that there is a certain amount of random size built in because the program selects units itself. But unless I'm missing something, you have to select the number of brigades, batteries and divisions for your enemy. If that was random, within limits, each battle would be a surprise on what you have encountered. And requiring more scouting, and instilling more caution and uncertainty.

= more fun.

A blast from the past.

This has now almost achieved what TC2M could always do via it's Open Play / Random Battle. (The button that looked like a "re-circ" in a car). I still use this most of the times when I dip back into that game.

I have always been a bit sad that SOW dropped this facility.

Hi guys

thanks for the positive comments, I hope you enjoy it.
First of all, I will add new theatres of war and new features to the Generator in the future. But it shall remain an easy-to-use tool aimed for quick creation of SP and MP ad hoc games. So the tool will never satisfy all wishes and it will never be a full-blown Scenario Editor. Some of the requested features are impossible to pull off in Excel... at least to my knowledge

Answering some questions:
Thanks for this. Great tool. Would it be possible to be able to include an option to use OOBs made with Garniers OOB Creator?
I can add any OOB in SOW layout to the Generator, but I need to adjust it a little to be used. The user will not be able to integrate custom OOBs himself, sorry.
(...) and even some carry over.
Carry over isn't possible at the moment as this would need to produce a new OOB each time.
Are you eventually going to release a version which will not require the need for Excel?
Short answer: No.
(...) And I recognize that there is a certain amount of random size built in because the program selects units itself. But unless I'm missing something, you have to select the number of brigades, batteries and divisions for your enemy. If that was random, within limits, each battle would be a surprise on what you have encountered. And requiring more scouting, and instilling more caution and uncertainty.

I understand your idea. I would also like to let the tool randomize the enemy within some parameters (like: Generate an opposing army with +10% to +20% strength...). But I don't see any possibility to do that. As MTG mentioned, you still have some randomness as a brigade can vary greatly in numbers and quality. And if you play against the AI, it can always happen that part of it's forces ignore an objective and move somewhere else or decide to remain immobile as a reserve.

I haven't looked into the functioning of your Excel work, but it is possible to easily generate a table of random numbers in Excel.

So instead of manually inputting the number of brigades and divisions for the AI, the user can set the parameters for the min-max number of corps, the min-max number of divisions, the min-max number of brigades and the min-max number of batteries. Or the spreadsheet can do it. Right now, each of your variables has a range of 1 - 10.

You could even require a regeneration of random numbers based on a set of parameters for an army, so that an army can't be too large or too small, and you can't end up with an all artillery army.

It would be great if we could import OOBs. If not I could send you a couple oobs that I have edited that play real well.

Very good work here. Thanks.

I am having trouble getting the random maps 4 to working. Anyone else?

Importing OOBs requires some manual steps and isn't completely hassle-free, so I will not add this feature in the tool.
What kind of OOBs do you want to have included? Are they balanced historical?
I didn't include the pictures for Random Maps 4 in the Generator. It is just to show that you can add more custom maps yourself to the list (but you won't see a picture).

EDIT: Never say never ;-) Importing custom OOBs has been introduced in v2.0.

I'm getting a game freeze after setting up your scenario generator v1.1.

It occurs just when the game starts to load after selecting scenario generator in the user scenarios.

This didn't occur with v1.0.

Does it happen with any map / theatre of war? Which mods do you have activated?
