Isn't this in as road column already?Kerflumoxed wrote:I like this idea.Speaking of the toolbar, has anyone considered allowing the brigade commander's (which is the level I most enjoy) have a marching option that would allow the Battalions (Regiments) to move in a "Column of Brigades" (I forget the correct command) with one behind the other in open terrain as is done when "road marching" rather then spreading out?
Thanks for the consideration.

"Column of regiments by brigade" which would look like this
XXXXXXXXXX

Where each X represents a company in a 4 regiment brigade. Note that this formation gives the 3 following regiments wheeling room in relation to the regiment in front of them.
"Column of regiments by brigade in mass" would look like this
XXXXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXXX
As seen above, there is no room for the following 3 regiments to maneuver in relation to the leading regiment, but the brigade takes up less room front to back. Obviously, both these formations are too wide for road travel and as Jack said would be used on open ground.
Jack, is this what you are looking for? Or are you talking about a formation used when the troops are marching on a road?IronBMike wrote:Isn't this in as road column already?Kerflumoxed wrote:I like this idea.Speaking of the toolbar, has anyone considered allowing the brigade commander's (which is the level I most enjoy) have a marching option that would allow the Battalions (Regiments) to move in a "Column of Brigades" (I forget the correct command) with one behind the other in open terrain as is done when "road marching" rather then spreading out?

You can get farther with a kind word and a gun than you can with a kind word alone.

Re:Gettysburg Tour
Will have to look for the command...memory is going fast! They say the second thing that goes IS the memory. Can't remember the first thing to go.
Anyway, what I am talking about is when the Battalion (Regiment) is put into a column of fours (Battalion. Right (or Left) - FACE. Forward, MARCH!) with one regiment following behind:
XXXX
XXXX 1st Regiment
XXXX
XXXX
XXXX
XXXX
XXXX
XXXX
XXXX
XXXX 2nd Regiment
XXXX
XXXX
and so forth.
Rather than what is currently in the game (excempt for road marches):
1 Rgt 2 Rgt 3 Rgt 4Rgt
XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX
XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX
XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX
XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX
XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX
XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX
XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX
In actual practice, this would be important, especially through wooded terrain for the artillery, as it allows the woods to be "broken" down and successive guns would "follow the trail" (which would be another concept altogether). In a recent game, I wanted to move a brigade between a fenced field and nearby woods. In order for me to move between these two obstacles, I had to individually move each Battalion (Regiment). If I selected parallel routes of march as in TC2M, one Battalion moved in the open while the remaining four Regiments (was using the Stonewall Brigade) "plowed" through the slower terrain.
Yes, this a wheel, but is not a "Wheel" command; rather it is "By Files Right (Left)" although I doubt it was issued as such because of the "Route Step."
Hope this makes sense!
Thanks

Essentially, yes! But unless I am missing something in TC2M (which is entirely possible, Norb), I can only use "road colum" on the roads. I would like to be able to use the same formation in open terrain which they did! :cheer:IronBMike wrote:Isn't this in as road column already?Kerflumoxed wrote:I like this idea.Speaking of the toolbar, has anyone considered allowing the brigade commander's (which is the level I most enjoy) have a marching option that would allow the Battalions (Regiments) to move in a "Column of Brigades" (I forget the correct command) with one behind the other in open terrain as is done when "road marching" rather then spreading out?

Cliffy - You wanted to know of more features; another one is the Go To Unit button. Which ever unit you have selected, you can hit a button the the tool bar and it takes you directly to that unit. No more searching around the map for the commander you have selected. This works well hand & hand with the last feature I mentioned. You can cycle through your commanders without the camera jumping around, then hit "Go To Unit" to focus on that commander. Very convenient.
Little Powell, the Got To Unit button sounds like a very useful feature. Was that your idea too?
Everyone bear with me. I'm still learning how to post on this board.

Re:Gettysburg Tour
Though I have not seen the new game, based on TC2M I'd second IronBMike's suggestion about toggling the map with the M key rather than having to click on the X to close it. This would make an already awesome game even easier to use.

Actually, you hit the ESC key, that will close any open dialog.

It's just good to know there actually is a developer that'll answer.
