Resolution issue when first starting the game

Post by RebBugler »

Question: When I start the game the screen is so large I can't navigate or get to the Options menu to fix the resolution...

I answered this question on the Matrix forum with the following solution:
I had the same issue as my HDTV serves as my monitor. Real easy to fix by opening the SOWWL.ini file found in Documents/SowWL. Change the screen resolution from =100 to =0. This will set the game to the default 1024x768. Then you can experiment with the other resolutions to see what works best for you. Of the larger resolutions I find that 2080x1024 works best for my setup. I use this for both my HDTV (while playing game) and game.
In addition, when you're stuck in the game and can't navigate out, use the Windows Task Manager to close the game - Ctrl+Alt+Del, select 'Start Task Manager', select Tab 'Applications', find NSD game running and select it, then select 'End Task'

I found this (running Win 7 on a MacBook Pro with retina display) - my solution was to tick "Disable Display Scaling on high DPI settings" in the Compatibility tab in Properties.

Sorry about this. We wanted the game to start in full screen, but unless you are running with normal fonts, it messes up. We have submitted a change so that it will start windowed and small. This will allow users to get to the menus and set it where they like it.

To fix this:
My Documents/SOWWL/sowwl.ini

You'll want to change the lines to these:
[initialization]
full screen=0
screen res=0

On shipping screen res is 100 which means the biggest possible resolution. This is causing the issues and will be changed as soon as we get a patch through.

What if you used the fix and it still doesn't allow you to get to a point to change the resolution yourself?

So, you found the Documents/SowWL/sowwl.ini file, you opened it and changed the line screen res=100 to screen res=0, saved it, and you still can't see the Options button on the bottom of the screen of the Main Menu when you start up the game?

Yes that's exactly it. I only see the upper left corner of the menue I've even gone so far as to uninstall it and redownload it.

Edit
Too better explain what I see when I start it with the ini file being at
[initialization]
full screen=0
screen res=0

I see the left half of the square and the rest of the upper left 4th of the screen. would going in a negative direction in the ini file help or would that be more of a hindrance? Not doing anything?

I figured out how to fix it.
configured the ini file into
[initialization]
full screen=1
screen res=0
And then I was able to get all of it to pop up and fix the resolution.
